Here the [true] FIRST EDITION of the first illustrated encyclopedia published at the dawn of the discovery period. As a comprehensive contemporary picture of geographical- and historical knowledge, this "Nuremberg Cronicle" offers nothing less than a history of the world, and, in its own fashion, expanded the barriers of local ciites and states just as the transatlantic voyages expanded the boundaries of the world. As a representative picture of XV-Th. Century geographical- and historical knowledge , this work is unsurpassed among incunables, in which books of a religious and lithurgical nature predominate. It was a milestone in the history of printing as well,this work cotains more illustrations then had ever appeared in a printed book. The magnificent woodcut views (31 double page) are in most cases the first printed views of the cities and towns depicted!!! And they offer a representative view of how XV-Th. Century readers pictured places they would most likely, never visit....Many, such as the important double pp. view of Jerusalem, were based upon the most up-to-date reports of travellers. The colophon credits the artists Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff for their contributions a detail with fascinating implication, since Albrecht Durer was at this time, an apprentice in their workshop (!) Hartmann Schedel was a physician and an important humanist and book collector, whom's oustanding library provided much of the research material for this monumental work. Onlaid with green Oasis and Herit's fawn calf and blocked with black ink. Kept in a fitted gold tooled solander case. A masterly book in a binding by a modern master. A good and complete copy.
