[+4 PP. inserted, listing the names of the Judges] Publisher's device on title page foliated tailpieces eight portrait plates and one folding plate showing the execution of Charles I, at Whitehall, by Wenzel Hollar. Some quires browned. See: Rahir 2026; Lowndes IV, 2660; Brunet V, 913; Graesse VI, 2, 185. This is a collection of Latin documents published by a royalist in exile shortly after the execution in 1649 of Charles I. contains records of the trials and executions of the King himself and some of his chief supporters as well as their letters and speeches composed during their final days. Strafford Lord Deputy for Ireland and Archbishop Laud were executed in the early period of the Great Rebellion, while James Hamilton, Arthur Lord Capel and Henry Rich (Lord Holland) were executed shortly after the King. A good copy in original calf, spine with raised bands and red Morocco title piece. Double gilt filet lines at covers. Some corners bumped spine ends slightly damaged.A most desirable copy of a scarce, well illustrated book. |
