Edition2-nd Ed.
PublishedJan Roman De Jonge Amsterdam 1741
DescriptionEngraved frontispiece, engraved title, engraved full page portrait of the author, 60 full-page and 5 vignettes. (24), 340, (43) pp. Second edition of this classical work on marine life of the Moluccas, in fact the first modern work on tropical fauna. There are important geological and mineralogical annotations on the Moluccan Islands. Georg Everhard Rumphius (1628-1702) became blind in 1670, but worked on, with the help of an assistant. Furhter disasters followed in 1674 when his wife and daughter died during an earthquake and in 1687 his library, including his manuscripts and drawings, were destroyed by fire. But he started again from the outset. Rumphius, also known as the "Indian Pliny", was one of the great tropical naturalists of the seventeenth century. Born in Germany, he spent most of his life in the employ of the Dutch East India Company, stationed on the island of Ambon in eastern Indonesia. The first edition appeared in 1705. Our copy is a fine uncut large paper copy. See; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt; VOC, 591; Nissen; ZBI 3519 .
