DescriptionXXXI-639 PP.Uncut. Illistrated. Orig. Full vellum, spine with raised bands. Facsimile, published 1912. Agricola's book, first published in Latin at Basel in 1556, was "the first systematic treatise on mining and metallurgy and one of the first technological books of modern times."(PMM) For nearly two centuries it remained the standard authoritative text on the subject. Every aspect and process of the mining and melting of metals was comprehensively treated, including administration and the duties of officials and companies. Among the most important sections are those dealing with mechanical engineering and the use of water-power, pumps and ventilation, the blowing of furnaces and the transport of ore. Also described are the preparation of saltpeter and nitric acid, glassmaking, the manufacture of sulphur and alum, the use of the magnetic dip needle and divining rod. The two hundred and seventy-three large woodcut illustrations depicting mining methods, animal and water-powered machinery, tools and equipment were the work of Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch. A fine and clean copy, in the original full vellum.
