descriptionA fine, multiple folded, map of Japan. A coloured woodblock print, with at the borders 28 views of towns and some temples,9 separate, smaller, town plans, a double hemisphere world-map, various legenda and textblocks with extensive descriptions. The Japanese have a far different view on cartography than we know from European mapmakers. These maps, some dating as far back as Edo period, draw on the ancient Japanese papermaking and woodblock printing tradition. Many maps lack a firm direction orientation and it is common for text to run in any and all directions. Japanese maps also had no firm shape and it is common to see projections and extensions added to suit the territory depicted. As Japanese cartography developed into the Meiji period western mapmaking styles began to exert an ever more pronounced influence. Nonetheless, the woodblock map printing tradition persisted into the late 1890s. Beautiful hand colored artisan maps were still being produced in Japan long after European and American publishers substituted quality for quantity with inferior the wax engraving process.
