descriptionThe most impressive of all of Callot's prints: The siege of Breda. His most prestigious military commission, representing one of Spains most significant victories in the eithy years war against the Dutch. The project was commisioned by the Infanta Isabella, Regent of Spain and Archduchess of the Spanish Netherlands, to commemorate the triumphant capture of the Dutch held fortress of Breda in 1624-25. In this mammoth composition, Callot succeeded not only in producing a military map showing the fortifications and troop deployments but also achieved a novel combination of the art of cartography and theatrical staging. Composed of six etched plates, Callot's maps appears like a synoptic view of the siege with the simultaneous fusion of different landscapes, events, and genre scenes of army life. The fortifications, the troupes, the looting ,the landscape; everything in place, as dramatic as real life in a besieged town. The commander of the Spanish troops, Spinola, is carefully portrayed, as is, in fact, Callot, both at lower left centre.
